Organic Granola: What to Look For and What the Label Means

Organic granola is granola made with ingredients grown to USDA organic standards: no synthetic pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers, and no GMOs. To carry the USDA Organic seal, at least 95% of the ingredients have to be certified organic, from the oats to the sweetener to the add-ins. Organic tells you how the ingredients were grown. It does not automatically mean low sugar, and it does not automatically mean allergen-free. Those are separate claims worth checking on the label. Our two organic granola flavors go further than the seal: USDA organic, made without seed oils, and free from all top 9 allergens. Here is how to read an organic granola label and choose a clean one.

What does "organic granola" actually mean?

Organic is a certification, not a marketing word. In the United States, the USDA runs the National Organic Program and decides what earns the seal.

  • 100% Organic: every ingredient is certified organic.
  • Organic: at least 95% of ingredients are certified organic. This is the seal you see most often on granola.
  • Made with organic ingredients: at least 70% organic. These products cannot use the USDA Organic seal on the front.

Certified organic ingredients are grown without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMOs. For granola, that mainly covers the oats and the sweetener. If a bag says "organic" but you do not see the green-and-white USDA seal, read the ingredient panel to see how much is truly certified.

Is organic granola healthier than regular granola?

Organic controls how the ingredients are grown. It does not control sugar, oil, or calories. A granola can be certified organic and still be high in added sugar and cheap oils. So organic is a good start, not the whole story.

Two things matter just as much as the seal:

  • Added sugar: check the "Includes Xg Added Sugars" line, not just total sugar.
  • Oils: many granolas use refined seed oils like canola or sunflower. If you are avoiding seed oils, look for granola made without them.

The cleanest granola is organic and honest about sugar and oil.

Why organic and allergen-free belong together

If you are shopping for a family with food allergies, organic solves one problem and allergen safety solves another. You want both. Our granola line is free from all top 9 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and sesame. That means the same bag that meets the organic standard is also safe for most allergy households. For the full allergen-free lineup, see our top 9 free granola collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is organic granola gluten-free?
Organic and gluten-free are two different certifications. Organic granola can still contain gluten. Our granola is made with gluten-free whole grain oats, but always check the label for the certification you need.

Is organic granola safe for nut allergies?
It depends on the facility. Our granola line is free from all top 9 allergens, including peanuts and tree nuts, so it works for most nut-allergy households.

Does organic granola have less sugar?
Not necessarily. Organic refers to how the ingredients are grown, not how much sugar is added. Check the added sugars line on the label.

What makes Safe + Fair granola organic?
